Seasoning a salad is the best way to fully enhance all the flavors of the vegetables and lettuce used. In this blog, we discuss the most suitable herbs for this purpose. Think basil, chives, lemon balm, and parsley.
1. Parsley
Parsley is undoubtedly the most commonly used herb when it comes to salads. The herb pairs well with almost all possible vegetables. You can use the leaves as a flavor enhancer or as a garnish.
You can even choose from three types of parsley: curly parsley and flat-leaf parsley. The taste of flat-leaf parsley is often spicier than that of curly parsley. Both types are packed with calcium and vitamins A and C. In short: a healthy addition to your salad!
2. Basil
With this Mediterranean herb, you bring summer to your salad. You often taste it in Southern dishes. To fully enjoy the flavor, it's best to finely chop the leaves. Also, it's better not to mix basil with other herbs because it tastes best on its own.
3. Chives
The thin and long stems of chives taste delicious in salads and vinaigrettes. For those who have never tasted the herb: the taste is quite similar to onions, only finer and milder.
Moreover, chives have a stimulating effect on your appetite and digestion. The herb is rich in vitamins A and C, minerals, and antioxidants. Chives even help with sleep problems. Fun fact: another name for chives is pipegrass, because of the long pipe-shaped strands.
4. Lemon Balm
The fresh green, serrated leaves of lemon balm closely resemble those of mint. However, the smell and taste are completely different. As the name suggests, lemon balm has a penetrating, honey-sweet lemon taste and scent. So it's ideal for adding a fresh and summery touch to your salad.
